Abalone Weekend
It was along way to come for a minus 1.5 tide.

This is why I came for the minus 1.5 tide. These are two abalone snug in their warm crevice aboout 2 meters down.

My first ab of the weekend.

Celebratory beers on the beach with the morning's haul.

The rules work like this. Three a day and three in possession. So that means you can keep getting them, provided you keep eating them.
On the beach, minutes from the water, ab sashimi with wasabl and soy sauce.

Gratuitous ab porn.

That night - the feast was breaded and deep fried abalone steaks "lou's north beach" style.

Next day the leftover steaks from night before went in BALTs; Bacon, Abalone, Lettuce and tomato on toasted sourdough with mayo. Bull pine and sea ranch pacific view optional.

Abalone ceviche: lime juice, garlic, green salsa, cilatro, salt, pepper, coriander, tobasco.

Grilled ab rolls stuffed with jalapeno and cheddar cheese. and kobe steaks.

More gratuitous ab porn.

en route to Hanoi tonight.

Have A Good Seder
Gefilte Fish - my modern recipe

The stock:
1 pound of large carrots
2 large onions quartered
1/2 bunch parsley
salt
pepper
Set to boil in a large soup pot
The Fish dumplings:
3 pounds whitefish fillets skinned
3 pounds tilapia filets
1 large onion
4 eggs
1 cup matzo meal (maybe more - maybe less)
salt
pepper
With large knife, hand chop the fish until a nice chunky mince.
Chop onion until fine. in a large bowl mix by hand until smooth.
mix eggs in a separate bowl, pour in with fish, thorougly hand mix.
While mixing fish onion egg, hand shake the matzo meal in so that it is thoroughly distributed. Continue mixing and add salt and pepper to taste.
Chill for half an hour.
Wet hands - form little loaves, and with a slotted spoon add the fish dumplings to the stock. Cook with the lid on the pot for 2 hours - a gentle boil.
Chill overnight.
Serve with a piece of the cooked carrot and a little of the stock with white or red horseradish.
So you might ask - what's modern about this ?
First - no fish stock, just a simple vegetable stock.
Radically cuts down on the stink factor not spending a day boiling fish heads.
Second - Tilapia and whitefish. No trout, no pike, no carp.

The Menu recounted
Blog style, that is last first, and first last ...
a general recounting of meals prepared over the duration of our stay.
The last Friday Night:
We entertain Emily and Matt, Matt's first meal at Shag, with BBQ Chicken, corn, peas, tomatoes, rice, and Larry's Italian french bread for our shabbos loaf. Noah the bull mastiff and Gryf the britany pup met and made great friends. We used two scented tea candles for our Friday night prayers.
Thursday night:

We return from Little Camp with two freshly caught 10 inch brook trout. It is essential that young brains occasionally get the special nutrients only available from brook trout caught and cooked within hours of being in the stream. The rest are some whitefish filets in the pan with the trout hoping to gain a little nobility by sharing the same grease.
Wednesday night:

Beef summer vegetable soup with Kris and Mike. This was the second of two soup pots we had that we ate on for several days.
Tuesday Afternoon

Bluegill filets from the lake
Sunday Night:
An Italian thing, pasta with marinara/or sausage and peppers if you prefered and the last of the orange home grown tomatoes from Chicago.
Friday night dinner with Matt Taylor:
Grilled leg of lamb. potatoes, salad, peas, rice pilaf, very nice bread from Chicago for our Shabbos loaf, and a couple of kinds of oh so delicious stinky cheese all provided by our purveyor up for a short trip to the U.P.
An atypical lunch:
usually it was nutella/banana snadwiches or hot dogs, but this was the alternative lunch, pasta or pasty, up to you to pick the last vowel, with tomatoes and cucumbers.
Our first soup pot:

Roast chicken and corn chowder
And Sunday Night - our first full day

Roasted whole chicken on the grill, potates roties, mashed potatoes, corn and home grown tomato salad from Leroy Avenue.
